The Martian depicts Mark Watney (Matt Damon) in a less than original storyline where he is left behind by his crew, on Mars. Yeah, this idea of space travel gone wrong is more than generic these days and pretty unoriginal. But so are these reviews. I guess it's hard to be original in a world saturated with art. But if you leave all the originality aspect aside it is a solid piece of work. The script is perfectly timed and therefore funny, in parts (though, of course, not funny enough to be considered a Comedy at the Golden Globes. Serious oversight there). Regardless though, it does build tension and is one of the best Ridley films for a long time and I did genuinely believe in all of the characters. But would I watch it again? Probably not. Am I going to go in tomorrow raving about it? Probably not. So it's good, but by no means mind-blowing.
In a sentence: Yeah it's pretty good.
