Dev Patel stars in this biopic, led by true events, about the man and life of Srinivasa Ramanujan (a mathematician, who overcame extraordinary circumstances to get his revolutionary work published).
I'm disappointed.
This film has such a rich story and yet the structure of this film makes it almost dull. I'm ashamed to say that I don't think I enjoyed this film much, if at all. Which really is a shame, because the content is so riveting and dynamic and yet the filmmakers couldn't translate this into the screenplay.
The film starts off at what should have been a heartbreaking separation but it hadn't set up this emotional bond, let alone the characters, making this separation not seem as heart-wrenching as it should have been simply because I wasn't fully invested in these characters yet. And this is disappointing, because I so desperately wanted to be.
This is a man who not only overcame poverty and heart ache but also extraordinary prejudices and racism. He was a marvel. And yet we never fully appreciate this in the film. Yes, we get cliched film fillers to plug along the storyline, but we never feel totally immersed or emotionally invested.
Ok, 'never' might be an overestimate as I'm not ashamed to say, that on occasion, I did in fact cry but needless to say I'm still not impressed. I wouldn't watch it again and I am ultimately disappointed because IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN AMAZING.
And it's not. Thanks Hollywood/the industry/whoever's to blame. You've done it again. You've messed up a beautiful story about a man who should have revolutionised maths in film. But he didn't. Because of you.
In a sentence: Ok, that was all pretty harsh but the sentiment is true: I'm disappointed.
