Touching the Void

What a documentary.

I first heard about this story years ago, right back in primary school and the notion of it has stuck with me ever since. The pure notion of the story is enough to hook the entirety of your attention, let alone the film itself.

This incredible true story is negotiated with such care, making it truly riveting. Despite the format in which there are interviews from the people, who clearly survived the traumatic event, the way it is told has you constantly on edge- do they survive ?! It's tense.

It follows 2 young men on an adventure which became immortalised in the mountaineering community as a legend. Both climbing down mountain, 1 breaks their leg, the other cuts the rope, leaving the injured to fall to their death. I mean, come on, what a premise!

You know the survive, you know they end up, if not necessarily mentally, but physically, ok. You know all of this. And yet, the use of re-enactment drives you to question this indisputable fact constantly. You are constantly double guessing yourself. It's incredible.

in sentence: What a true story, what a film.
