I genuinely love this film. Its charm is unavoidable, despite all of its flaws, and there are flaws, its ultimately gorgeous. Gorgeous. I could rematch this film endlessly, listen to the soundtrack on repeat, and just live within its walls forever. Its the modern studio musical. Stunning. And weirdly truthful and real, if not in a romanticised way. But even though i loved it, it's still a Jazz film featuring no main black characters which is so many things but ultimately its desperately disappointing. To completely rejuvenate this musical genre you'd have thought they would have been more diverse in its casting, but clearly that was asking too much of an already experimental film. Fucking bullshit. But unfortunately its charm is something I'm inextricably drawn to and so i cant help but marvel in its glory.
Thank fuck it lost the Oscar to Moonlight thought. Even though they fucked that up to, seriously what the fuck is that?! Finally a film with a story that rarely gets to be portrayed in actually wins and they fuck it up so badly all anyone can remember is the fact that La La Land didn't win and they're moment, which should have been monumental, was overshadowed massively.
Anwho, rant done.
In a sentence: I still love it, which irritated me slightly but does speak volumes about the film itself.
