I finally got round to watching some Hitchcock films because of my Film A-Level, and thank fuck for that because otherwise I probably would have put off giving them a go for a while. He's the ultimate auteur and every one of his films therefore have this certain flair which is absent from a lot of films around now. Having said that though there's still this sense that they haven't aged all that well concerning his treatment and presentation of women but despite this its got this nostalgic element to it which makes a modern day viewer have this strange hankering for this romantic past. The sweeping shots, the almost artificial set which allows us as viewers to feel as if we could be walking down this studio made road. I don't quite know how to describe it but watching these old films make me feel so connected to the production of them, as if i could see the lights surrounding it and the massive studio entrances. I don't know, it's just a good film.
But it's not perfect. The plot has multiple holes and is obscenely complicated and the female characters are fucked about so much but ultimately it transforms a strong woman into a weak one. Also the slightly rapey kind of kisses made me feel so uncomfortable, especially the scene where Kim Novak wakes up naked in Scottie's apartment. Just fucking weird.
In a sentence: Complicatedly drawn in to its charms, but probably won't choose to watch it anymore times than i already have.
